Local video to open International Christian Film Festival

The short video “Yehudah,” a Messiah origin story created this year by a local catechist and Bible study teacher who cast former and present students as actors in the project, has been selected to open the International Christian Film Festival April 28 in Orlando, Florida.

Happy birthday, Ida, 104 years young

Adelaida Barboza Freitas (Ida) was born April 8, 1912, in Sprecklesville, Maui. Growing up on a sugar plantation, with 11 siblings was not easy, but it taught Ida many important lessons that have helped carry her through 104 years of life. Devotion to God and the church was always “number one,” followed by honesty, dependability, hard work, self-discipline, hospitality and, of course, a great sense of humor.

Often, as I drive to work in downtown Honolulu, I see people standing out on the street mixed in with the fast-paced successful business personnel and wonder, “What is his or her circumstance? Probably, he or she is homeless.” There are others that can be seen pushing carts filled with their belongings or groceries oblivious to the surroundings. These people literally live on the edge of society and can be very much forgotten. Working with seminarians, it is the spirit of minority that I would like to impart to them.

Grant assists Kalaupapa rare photos project

The Hawaii Council for the Humanities has awarded the U.S. Province of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts a $5,000 “preservation and access grant” for a project identifying Kalaupapa residents in a century-old collection of more than 600 photographic glass plate negatives in the religious order’s archives.
