For the past 16 years, the Hawaii Catholic Herald has hosted an annual “Lenten Luncheon,” gathering diocesan staffers to share meatless recipes right before Ash Wednesday. The event not only provides eager office cooks a chance to savor fare for Lent’s meat-free Fridays, but is as well an opportunity for friends and co-workers to sit down at table as one ohana.

St. Patrick piano teacher celebrates 60 years in Catholic schools

Sacred Hearts Sister Anne Marie Tamanaha, herself confined to a wheelchair, received a standing ovation from 700 fellow teachers and school administrators for her six-decade career in education at the Annual Conference for Catholic School Educators Mass Feb. 5 in the Sacred Hearts Academy gym.

Obituary: Deacon Sidney J. Townsley | 1924-2016

Sidney Joseph Townsley, who once said his “main joy” as a deacon was bringing people into the Catholic faith through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, died in Honolulu on Jan. 26 at the age of 91. He was a deacon for 29 years.

Obituary: Deacon Luciano ‘Shiano’ Pius | 1949-2016

Chuukese Deacon Luciano “Shiano” Pius, one of a group of Micronesian permanent deacons welcomed by Bishop Larry Silva over the past decade to serve in Hawaii, died on Jan. 14 at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. He was 67 and a deacon for 13 years.
