MARYKNOLL SISTER CECILE THERESE BURTON | 1924-2016

Maryknoll, N.Y. — Maryknoll Sister Cecile Therese Burton, who served as an educator and social worker in Hawaii for more than 40 years, died Feb. 17 after a long illness at Maryknoll Sisters Home Care, N.Y. She was 91.

Obituary: Deacon Sidney J. Townsley | 1924-2016

Sidney Joseph Townsley, who once said his “main joy” as a deacon was bringing people into the Catholic faith through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, died in Honolulu on Jan. 26 at the age of 91. He was a deacon for 29 years.

Chuukese Deacon Luciano “Shiano” Pius, one of a group of Micronesian permanent deacons welcomed by Bishop Larry Silva over the past decade to serve in Hawaii, died on Jan. 14 at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. He was 67 and a deacon for 13 years.

Educator and artist Sister Julie Louise Thevenin of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary died peacefully in her sleep Jan. 26 at Malia O Ka Malu convent in Kaimuki. She was 97 and a religious sister for 76 years.

Sister Charlotte Ann Esch of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM Sisters), who taught at two parish schools on Kauai in the 1950s and 1960s, died Nov. 30 at Marian Hall in Dubuque, Iowa. She was 98, and spent 80 years in religious life.
