Father William Shannon, diocesan priest: The spirit of minority
Often, as I drive to work in downtown Honolulu, I see people standing out on the street mixed in with the fast-paced successful business personnel and wonder, “What is his or her circumstance? Probably, he or she is homeless.” There are others that can be seen pushing carts filled with their belongings or groceries oblivious to the surroundings. These people literally live on the edge of society and can be very much forgotten. Working with seminarians, it is the spirit of minority that I would like to impart to them.

“We have to follow Jesus and he reminds us of our Christian duty to give a voice to those who are unheard and to help those who are most vulnerable … We can all be missionaries and help our world’s sick, hungry, thirsty and all needy people.” (St. Patrick School student’s Rice Bowl Reflection) This […]
Bishop Larry Silva: 2016 Easter Message
How did one man who was put to death 2,000 years ago manage to become the center of a worldwide religion with billions of adherents over the centuries? How did his closest disciples manage to take his message out to the ends of the earth when they themselves were relentlessly pursued, persecuted, and in most cases put to death?
‘Are we Catholic yet?’

David and Jennifer Bowman, both 34, decided last year to take their ohana of eight on a unique journey of conversion. Excitement shines in the eyes of the entire clan as the day of their baptism into a new faith draws near.

Kalaupapa love story
Several years ago, Jimmy Brede sat in the shade outside Leahi Hospital on Oahu waiting for the van to drive up. When it did, the door opened and out came his wife, Nancy.
“There she is!” Jimmy sang out as if it was the first time he’d laid eyes on her. “She’s going to be 87, but she’s still my Sweet Sixteen.”
Talk Story | Office for Social Ministry: Lenten stories of hope
“It is a good thing that the Crucifixion and Death of Jesus are not to be judged by human standards. When we think of the hardships so many in our world face, we might easily grow discouraged; but our God offers us hope, and wants all of us to work together to build a world of peace and justice.” (CRS Project Rice Bowl 2016)
Known to all as Father ‘Jojo,’ La Salette priest was much loved
Everyone called him Father “Jojo.” It was easier to say than his formal name, Father Joven Toledo Junio, and it fit his effervescent personality and boyish looks. So it was a surprise to many who knew the La Salette missionary from his 17 years of service in Hawaii to learn that he died March 6 in the Philippines. He was 57.
