The day started off pretty dismally, with dark skies dumping lots of rain. But by the time the golfers arrived to check in for Our Lady of Good Counsel School’s second annual Golf Scholarship Tournament Sept. 25 at the Hawaii Prince Course in Ewa, there was nothing but blue skies.
Thirty-one teams of three players each took part in the benefit, the brainchild of the school board of Our Lady of Good Counsel School, Pearl City, and the pastoral council of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish.
The chairman for the second year was Keith Yoshida (the man famous for his Waikele neighborhood Christmas light display). Returning to sponsor was the Lue family whose generosity made possible the $500 “early bird” cash prize drawing, and prizes for closest to the pin and greenies.
The par-three holes offered opportunities to win $10,000 for a-hole-in-one, a Kindle, and a Walmart gift certificate. Golfers waiting for the shotgun start tested their skills at the putting contest whose top prize was a television.
Winning the title of “most honest team,” went to Father Pascual Abaya, Tom Cabico and Osmund Puruganan who had the highest score for the second year in a row.
The school thanks all who were a part of this tournament: those who organized and volunteered, the generous donors, and the golfers for their time and contributions.
Many families at Our Lady of Good Counsel School will benefit from the tuition assistance the event provides. All in all, it was a win for everyone, providing scholarships for deserving students, a day with the best people, and a healthy dose of vitamin D in beautiful Hawaii.
