The Office for Social Ministry has a couple of events coming up for veterans trying to pick up their lives and move into successful futures.
The first, for vets with new residences they are looking to furnish, is a Housewarming Party, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Oct. 31, at the Kamiano Center on the Fort Street Mall, makai of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace.
The second, for vets who need a job, is the Stand Down and Job Fair, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Nov. 10, at the Hawaii National Guard Building 19, in Kalaeloa, at 1787 Shangri La Street.
The Housewarming Party is like a garage sale with all items 100 percent off. In other words: free.
Veterans will be able to take home small kitchen electronics, small pots and pans, dish towels, pot holders, kitchen rugs, bathroom rugs, shower curtains, curtain rings, pillows, blankets, bed spreads, sheets, pillow cases, small lamps.
Plus some non-perishable food and toiletries. You get the idea: things that transitioning veterans can use to make their little house a home. Also free: lunch.
The Stand Down and Job Fair will show vets reentering the civilian workforce how to prepare a resume for a federal position, how to acquire housing, and all about VA business and health benefits, and those pesky legal matters.
Vets can also practice for job interviews, meet employers and submit job applications.
The Stand Down will also offer free medical services, flu shots, housing information, haircuts, clothing, door prizes, legal advice and lunch.
Besides the Office for Social Ministry, event sponsors include the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs Health Care for Homeless Veterans Program and the State Office of Veteran Services.
