“It’s true: If I have a conflict with you and I kill you, the conflict’s over. But that is not the way.” | Pope Francis, who spoke Aug. 7 about the benefit of experiencing tension during his address to members of the global Eucharistic Youth Movement during the group’s weeklong meeting in Rome. The pope said conflicts can be positive because they help people understand their differences and learn to discuss them and reach a compromise. (Catholic News Service)

Still seeking peace, justice
FERGUSON, Mo. — Appropriately, the final “Faith in Ferguson” prayer service ended with a procession from Our Lady of Guadalupe Church to its grotto dedicated to the parish namesake, Our Lady of Guadalupe.
St. Louis Archbishop Robert J. Carlson Aug. 5 led the group of about 300 people shortly after closing his reflection with a request of Mary.
“May we ask the Blessed Mother, who said, ‘My whole being proclaims the greatness of the Lord,’ to intercede for us and for Ferguson, the greater St. Louis area, our state of Missouri and our nation,” he said.
A year ago, on Aug. 9, Michael Brown, an African-American teen, was fatally shot by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, who is white, unleashing a torrent of racial tension in Ferguson as well as nationwide.
A slogan of protesters last year, “No peace, no justice,” hearkens to what Blessed Paul VI said for the 1973 World Day of Peace: “If you want peace, work for justice.”
Peace and justice have been a theme for the Archdiocese of St. Louis in the past year. (CNS)

Model mother
St. Gianna Beretta Molla gave her life for her family in the most literal sense. She died at age 39 from complications of a uterine tumor seven days after giving birth to her fourth child – a girl she was determined to have despite the risk to her own life.
Gianna had a devout upbringing in northern Italy and became a doctor focused on pediatrics. She married her husband in 1955 and had three children before falling ill while pregnant with her fourth. Her youngest, Gianna Emanuela, would go on to become a doctor herself. (www.loyolapress.com)
