50 years ago — July 2, 1965

There’s no place like the home parish
As the blazing flames soared upward, the evening fire lighted up the faces of a people gathered in the cottage yard. No, it wasn’t a parish cook-out this time. It was the burning of the parish mortgage — a dream come true Saturday, June 30, at St. Anthony Parish, Kailua.
If the long, colorful debt banner could talk, what a story would be told! Just eight years ago our parishioners stared tearfully at a burned-out church building, faced a tremendous debt, and prayed for enough money to pay the bills and meet the interest rates on the mortgage. …
Last January, the finance committee launched an all-out St. Anthony Debt Reduction Campaign, with the goal of $100,000 by the end of June. But the “miracle” was not the achievement of the monetary goal; the “miracle” was the building of the faith community while tearing down the parish debt.

Bishop-designate to arrive July 4
Bishop of Honolulu-designate Larry Silva will arrive in Hawaii to stay on July 4, 17 days before his ordination and installation.
In the meantime he is spending his last few weeks on the mainland getting prepared mentally, spiritually and materially for his new job.
He last spoke to the Hawaii Catholic Herald on June 20 from the Oakland airport on his way to Orange, Calif., where he was to go on a week-long retreat.
“I am so busy, I hardly have time to get nervous” about the upcoming ordination, he said. “There is so much to do.”
He said he has been overwhelmed by the congratulations and best wishes of many of his friends and colleagues.
“People have been very, very affirming,” he said.
