The Diocese of Honolulu is tapping the time and talent of clergy from points east and south on the Mainland to give Hawaii pastors and lay leaders a few pointers on Catholic stewardship in major workshops on two islands in January and February.
Maui will host “Stewardship Days” with sessions on Jan. 23 and 24 with a keynote speaker from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Oahu will have workshops on Feb. 6 and 7 and will feature an Oahu pastor and priests from Ohio and Oklahoma and a deacon from Georgia as guest presenters.
Bishop Larry Silva will lead the opening prayers and remarks on Oahu.
The events are part of a new diocesan initiative to promote stewardship as a “way of life” for Island Catholics. They are being coordinated by the diocesan Office of Stewardship and Development.
Here is the main speaker for Maui:
- Father Daniel J. Mahan is the pastor of two parishes in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. He has a long affiliation with the International Catholic Stewardship Council and is the former executive director of the Center for Catholic Stewardship at Marian University. He will speak on stewardship as spirituality, how to communicate stewardship, and stewardship of time, talent and treasure.
Here are the main speakers for Oahu:
- Msgr. Daniel Mueggenborg, the pastor of Christ the King Parish in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has incorporated the spirituality of stewardship in each of his parish assignments since 1996. He will talk about the milestones and pitfalls of implementing and developing stewardship in parish settings.
- Father Michael Troha is the pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Willoughby, Ohio, which he has developed as a stewardship parish over the past five years. He will speak on practical steps for parish stewardship development.
- Deacon Don McArdle, the chief executive officer of Catholic Stewardship Consultants and a deacon at St. Mary on the Hill Church in Augusta, Georgia, has been a certified public accountant since 1970 and a deacon in the Diocese of Savannah since 1979. His topic will be the spirituality of stewardship.
- Msgr. John Mbinda is the pastor of St. John Apostle and Evangelist Parish in Mililani. He will talk on his parish’s “stewardship journey” over the past year.
