The Diocese of Honolulu has designated nine churches, at least one on each island, as places where Catholics may obtain a plenary indulgence on the occasion of the Year of Consecrated Life, Nov. 30, 2014, to Feb. 2, 2016.
The customary conditions are required. They are sacramental Confession, Holy Communion and prayers for the intentions of the pope. The indulgence — remission of the temporal punishment a person is due for sins that have been forgiven — may also be offered for the souls in Purgatory.
In Hawaii, the indulgence may be obtained by visiting the following sites and reciting the Liturgy of the Hours or engaging in a suitable period of devout reflection, concluding with the Lord’s Prayer, the Profession of Faith and invocations of the Virgin Mary.
- The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, Honolulu (especially with veneration of the relics of St. Marianne Cope and St. Damien DeVeuster)
- St. Raphael Church, Koloa, Kauai
- St. Anthony Church, Wailuku, Maui
- Sacred Hearts Church, Lanai
- St. Joseph Church, Kamalo, Molokai
- St. Francis Church, Kalaupapa, Molokai
- St. Philomena Church, Kalawao, Molokai
- Annunciation Church, Waimea, Hawaii (until the dedication of St. Michael Church, Kailua-Kona; thereafter at St. Michael Church)
- St. Joseph Church, Hilo, Hawaii
The indulgence may also be obtained by members of religious orders participating in international meetings and celebrations in Rome established by the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life, and engaging in pious reflection and reciting the Lord’s Prayer, the Profession of Faith and invocations of the Virgin Mary.
Members of religious orders who are ill or otherwise unable to visit these sacred places may receive the plenary indulgence by fulfilling the standard conditions and prayers and making a spiritual visit, offering their illness and the hardships to God through Mary.
