Anyone who knows Arline Sullivan can’t help but notice what a joyful person she is. And when you really get to know her, you realize that her joy comes from her strong Catholic faith and her great love for Jesus and Mother Mary. That love for Christ may have been what has gotten her through much adversity in her life.
Arline was born with cerebral palsy. This disease has debilitated her body and requires her to use a walker or a cane to get around. But the daily challenges of living with cerebral palsy have not prevented Arline from serving the Lord or doing what she loves. She has enjoyed teaching religious education classes in Kauai’s westside parishes for more than 40 years. Her devotion to Christ and her love of children have allowed her, through her teaching, to bring much joy to the many students whose lives she has touched through the years.
In spite of her handicap, you will probably see Arline in church every Sunday. Not being able to drive has required her to be resourceful, so she rides the Kauai Bus or catches a ride with a friend to attend Mass at the various churches on Kauai. And just because she uses a walker, don’t underestimate Arline or get in her way! She moves quickly and with purpose!
Praying is also what brings Arline the most exultation and comfort. She prays the rosary frequently during the day, and if you ever visit Arline at her home, you will be amazed at her rosary table. It is covered with the many beautiful and intricate rosaries collected over the years. Admire one of these rosaries while you are there, and you will surely receive one of them as a gift. That is just Arline’s way.
Many would say that Arline’s home is her sanctuary. She is fiercely independent and takes pride in keeping a neat house. But many who visit her are instantly drawn to her amazing collection of religious artifacts. Her walls are adorned with beautiful pictures of saints, many popes, St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope. She also has many charming saint figurines and her favorite “angels,” which she has collected for many years. In her quiet time, Arline likes watching Catholic DVDs and reading her religious books.
The Lord has blessed us all with a woman of courage, faith and determination in Arline Sullivan. She is truly a devoted servant of Christ and an inspiration to all who come in contact with her.
