Ladies of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Pearl City, are seen preparing the bar-b-que sticks of tasty beef for the Mardi Gras Carnival to be held by the parish at 1425 Waimano Home Road, Pearl City the evenings of February 7 and 8. This benefit is for the new school currently under construction and which will be opened in September.

Crosses, prayers mark abortion anniversary
A protest rally on Jan. 23, with crosses gathered, a bell tolled, prayers offered and sung, and signs lifted high to signify the beliefs and values of a faithful people, marked the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision to legalize abortion.
Approximately 800 people came to the 5 p.m. gathering at the state capitol to support the Hawaii Right to Life organization and participate in a walk around the building.
Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario began the event with a prayer and later walked with the crowd. Phil Moore, director of Hawaii Right to Life, spoke with dismay that Cheryl Vasconcellos of Planned Parenthood was excited and happy that her office had finally been given permission to perform abortions in their office at 1164 Bishop St.

One step closer to canonization

This year, the Franciscan Sisters have something more than a birthday to celebrate. On Jan. 13, the 20 cardinals and bishops of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints voted unanimously to recommend that the pope declare her “venerable.”
A venerable decree officially affirms that Mother Marianne “lived a life of heroic virtue” and positions her two steps away from canonization.
