Diocese strengthening AIDS education efforts
Ignorance and fear. Those are the two biggest obstacles to conquering the disease which is reaching epidemic proportions in the United States.
The Diocese of Honolulu continues to develop its program to combat the panic and the lack of knowledge which has made a terrible affliction worse and more widespread.
The Department of Religious Education, the Family Life Office, and the Office for Youth Ministry Services presented some of the AIDS [Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome] educational material to the Presbyteral Council last week …
Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario left no doubt of his commitment to this joint diocesan effort. “We cannot hide our heads in the sand hoping it (AIDS) will go away — it will not,” he said at the meeting.

Creating safe environments
As a result of the sex abuse scandal that rocked the American Catholic Church over the past two years, the U.S. bishops pledged to create safe environments in their dioceses for children and young people.
Eighty-five priests from Oahu, Kauai and Molokai attended a day-long session, Jan. 8, at St. Stephen Diocesan Center — the first of a series of training programs in Hawaii designed to help carry out that pledge.
Called “Creating and Maintaining Safe Environments,” the program presented the priests with a pastoral code of conduct.
It also discussed the legal responsibilities of church workers and reviewed the identification, response and reporting of sexual abuse.
