To our readers,
For nine decades, the Hawaii Catholic Herald has served our readers and provided a way for isle Catholics to connect, to learn and to grow together in faith.
The past 87 years have seen major changes, as any publication would over such a long period of time. The Herald has changed its size, its use of color, its design and myriad other details.
You’ve stuck with the Herald through it all, and for that we are very grateful.
In recent months the Herald has gone through another significant shift. The sudden closure of our longtime printer, Hawaii Hochi, in July sent us scrambling to find a new company that could meet our production needs. Fortunately we were directed to and have found a partner in The Maui News, which not only prints Maui’s weekly newspaper but a number of other publications, including Pacific Business News.
The switch to The Maui News necessitated some design changes, which you might have noticed in recent issues of the Herald. The newspaper is now slightly smaller, and is printed with a different type of printing press.
What has not and will not change is the Herald’s commitment to serving Hawaii’s Catholic community. We are determined to be a source of information, inspiration and faith formation for all.
Transitioning to a printer on another island has come with some new challenges, chief among which have been increased costs as the Herald must now factor interisland transit into its biweekly production budget.
To help make up the expected deficit, the Herald has weighed a few options to increase our revenue — including raising advertising rates and even our subscription rate.
We are not implementing those changes now. However, the Herald would like to humbly appeal to readers to consider making a donation so we can regain a firmer financial footing. If you are able, any amount would make a big difference as we continue our work serving the Catholic Church in Hawaii.
Mahalo for your support.
