Answers to questions about the celebration marking the 140th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of St. Francis

As the planner of the celebration marking the 140th anniversary of the arrival to Hawaii of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neuman Communities, here are my answers to questions I have been asked about the celebration, 6 p.m., Nov. 8, at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace.

Q: Will there be something to eat after Mass?

A: Yes, even with a crunch in the budget and the tragedy on Maui, we will have refreshments, but pot-luck style. Since we don’t know how many will be coming, just bring something to share. Call Sister Marie Jose Romano at 808-397-7228 to find out what is needed. But please don’t feel that you must bring something. Just come and celebrate. There is always plenty to share. God provides!

Q: Since we don’t know what the weather will be like, will there be tents to cover?

A: Yes, the Knights of Columbus will set up tents, tables, etc.

Q: Will parking be validated?

A: Yes, validation stickers will be available.

Q: Will we have the horse and carriage reenactment of the arrival like we did at the 125th anniversary?

A: No horse. No carriage. Think mini. We will have a mini reenactment. There will be a dialogue between Mother Marianne and the bishop, a chant of a verse of King Kalakaua’s hymn about the coming of the sisters, and a Hawaiian lamentation of the sorrow felt for the sisters as they give their lives in service to those afflicted with the dreaded disease of leprosy. All this will accompany the narrative.

Q: What else is there?

A: There will be the blowing of a conch shell, an oli, the presence of the Hawaiian societies, both men and women, and a special tribute to Mother Marianne.

Q: Can you tell us about the colorful artwork on this page?

A: The artwork is a reproduction of a four-foot by four-foot painting by Rik Fitch who lived in Kula, Maui, at the time he painted it. He lost his business to a Maui wildfire and now lives in Austin, Texas. The artwork depicts Mother Marianne and the sisters who, following the example of St. Francis, also pictured, served the people of Hawaii, especially those afflicted with leprosy. They answered the plea for help sent out by King Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani.

The background is the Kalaupapa peninsula. It is a reminder that when there is a plea for help, we must answer. Mother Marianne did 140 years ago when the plea for help came from afflicted Hawaii. Now the plea for help comes from Maui. We, too, must answer.

It is God who tugs at the strings of our heart to be compassionate and caring, no matter where the plea comes from — the sick, the poor, the homeless, those who have lost so much. So many have answered, and so must we.
