Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa, an organization of Kalaupapa residents, their relatives and friends, will present its first webinar of 2023, “Kalaupapa Month: A Time to Remember,” on Saturday, Jan. 14, 10-11:30 a.m.
This webinar of historical and modern-day photographs will look at how January was designated as Kalaupapa Month. Information on how to register for the webinar will be available in early January at www.kalaupapaohana.org. There is no charge.
Gov. David Ige signed in 2021 a bill designating January as Kalaupapa Month in Hawaii, so designated “to serve as an annual reminder to people all over of the importance of Kalaupapa and the significant sacrifices and contributions made by its residents throughout the history of Hawaii.”
It was Ka Ohana O Kalaupapa that first proposed designating January as a month to celebrate and honor Kalaupapa’s important history.
The Ohana selected January because of the number of significant dates that took place that month connected to Kalaupapa’s history.
