Remembering Hawaii’s first priest
The first Catholic missionary of Hawaii, Father Alexis Jean Augustin Bachelot, died at sea on Dec. 5, 1837, 175 years ago this month. His passing could be considered a martyr’s death.
Though seriously ill, Father Bachelot had been harshly expelled from the islands for a second time during the “dark decade” of Catholic persecution in Hawaii.
