Eight Hawaii candidates for the permanent diaconate will take another step toward ordination when Bishop Larry Silva confers on them the ministry of acolyte, Sept. 11, at St. Stephen Diocesan Center Chapel. There will be a reception after Mass.
They are Michael M. Browning of St. John Apostle and Evangelist Church; David G. Bruce of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church; Jason F. Jacinto of St. Joseph Church, Makawao; John R. Metz of St. Joseph Church, Makawao; Marlowe G. Sabater of Resurrection of the Lord Church; Darryl S. Salvador of Resurrection of the Lord Church; John K. Thomas of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church; and Derek G. H. Wong of St. Jude Church.
The men form Cohort 10, the tenth class to pursue the diaconate in the Diocese of Honolulu since 1978.
As acolytes, they will have the duty of assisting clergy in liturgical celebrations, particularly the Mass. The Rite of Acolyte is the last major step before their ordination as deacons.
In February, the candidates received the title of lector, allowing them to read the Word of God, except for the Gospel, at liturgical assemblies.
