Two women took steps forward in their commitment to the Marianne Cope Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order on Oahu through profession and candidate ceremonies during the 4:30 p.m. Mass Feb. 19 at Holy Trinity Church in Kuliouou. Capuchin Franciscan Father Michel Dalton, pastor, presided.
In the “Rite of Profession,” candidate Socorro Deguzman promised to observe the rule written for the order by St. Francis by living the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in her secular state all the days of her life.
Instead of vows, Deguzman made solemn promises to follow the example and words of St. Francis, be faithful to this vocation, consecrate herself to service in God’s Kingdom, build a more fraternal world, and strengthen the ecclesial community.
Her profession is a vocation and involves a permanent commitment to the Gospel life with a goal of perfect Christian love.
Our second ceremony was for “Inquirer” Teresa Jacobs who became a candidate for the order in the “Rite of Admission.” She asked to enter the fraternity of the order so that she can live more intensely and faithfully the grace and dedication of her Baptism by following the teachings and example of St. Francis and thus be of service to all in her secular state. This is all for the glory of God and his plan of love on behalf of all people.
This stage in the Franciscan journey consists of at least 18 months of formation and preparation for permanent commitment.
