Filipino Dinner, Liturgy, Discussion Held at Center
A Mass for the spirit, exotic Filipino cuisine for the body and a fascinating filmstrip for the mind.
They all added up to a full evening of camaraderie as more than fifty Filipino East-West Center students and guests gathered at the University’s Newman Center, last Saturday evening.
Newman Director Father Tom Sullivan, S.J., and Father Jaime Neri, S.J., East-West grantee, concelebrated the Mass and hosted the evening of spiritual and academic fellowship.
Students Jane Quinon and Susan Chou were chefs de cuisine, preparing traditional dishes from their Islands.
Dr. Wilhelm Solheim of the University of Hawaii’s Department of Anthropology presented the filmstrips of recent scientific excavation on the Philippines’ Samar Island, where rock shelters of prehistoric man have been found.

The cathedral crypt
Alongside the body of Bishop John J. Scanlan, entombed in a concrete mound, lies the remains of Sacred Hearts Bishop Louis Maigret.
Bishop Maigret died in 1882 and his successor, Bishop Herman Koeckemann, also of the Sacred Hearts order, constructed the burial crypt below the cathedral sanctuary floor. …
After Maigret’s entombment, the crypt was completely sealed off. In fact, it remained that way for nearly a century. Although Koeckemann’s contemporaries knew about the burial place, it was a matter taken for granted and, with the passing years, simply forgotten. …

Fish fry returns this Lent to Kailua parishes
It’s an exotic custom practiced on Fridays in springtime among the natives of far-off places like Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Lenten parish fish fry. It surfaced in Kailua in 2008, took a breather two years ago, and now it’s back.
On Feb. 24, the Knights of Columbus will be serving fish, fish nuggets for the kids, fries, coleslaw, applesauce, rolls and something called hushpuppies at St. Anthony Church … They will repeat the treat on March 23, 5-7:30 p.m., at St. John Vianney Parish.
