YOUCAT:* A sin is a word, deed, or intention by which man deliberately and voluntarily offends against the true order of things, as God’s loving providence has arranged them. [1849-1851, 1871-1872]
“Only someone who has seriously meditated on how heavy the Cross is can understand how serious sin is.” —St. Anselm of Canterbury
Sin is a tough subject to talk about, yet we know sin so well — which is probably why it’s so hard to talk about.
Every day we have to make choices or decisions. We are often tempted into choosing between right and wrong. Temptation is not a sin. Sin is freely choosing to do what we know is wrong — when we disobey God’s law on purpose.
When we sin, we choose ourselves over God. It’s when we decide that we know better than God and make choices contrary to his will for us that we sin. The Catholic Church teaches us that we can sin in thought, word or action, and that we are responsible for our sins and the damage and hurt they cause.
We are forgiven for our sins through the Sacrament of Reconciliation; however, we must admit our faults and “sin no more.”
#YearofFaith Challenge: Be prudent. Use the wisdom God has given you in making decisions for the good in all circumstances.
