New Owners for Star of the Sea ‘Painted’ Church
A happy fate has been decided for Star of the Sea Church, which escaped the 1990 lava flow that destroyed its mission community of Kalapana only to languish for five years along the side of a Big Island highway while a new location was being sought for it.
The diocese “decommissioned” the historic wood frame structure and sold it for $1 to a group of parishioners of the former mission who plan to restore and preserve it.
The Kalapana Ohana Association purchased the church Sept. 20 after almost a year of negotiations with the diocese.
Note: The church is now at the end of Hwy. 130 and a registered historic landmark.

Chaminade opens nursing school
Honolulu’s Marianist university sees a decade-long dream come to fruition with blessing of new center
A decade of dreaming and planning came to celebratory fruition at Chaminade University of Honolulu on Sept. 16. The school’s new nursing program dedicated its gleaming state-of-the-art Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence K.W. (BoHing Chan) Tseu Center for Nursing Education and inaugurated its first class of students.
