In a decree dated June 5, Bishop Larry Silva has granted permission for the lay Catholic organization Couples for Christ to conduct its ministries in the Diocese of Honolulu.
The Vatican-recognized organization began in 1981 as a lay movement in the Philippines and is now in 76 countries. It has expanded its family-oriented ministry into a number of sub-groups including Kids for Christ, Youth for Christ, Singles for Christ, Handmaids of the Lord and Servants of the Lord.
Bishop Silva gave his decree after Couples for Christ was found to be “fully in conformity” with diocesan rules put into effect last September for such organizations. The rules require a federal 501 (c)3 tax exempt status, compliance with diocesan safe environment requirements, and liability insurance.
In his decree, the bishop also asked pastors to welcome the group and encouraged lay people to join it.
Couples for Christ will host Marriage Enrichment Retreat I, a Year of Faith event for married couples focusing on spouses witnessing obedient love together, Aug. 17-18, at St. Anthony Retreat Center in Kalihi Valley.
The registration fee of $300 per couple covers one-night accommodations and meals. For information, contact Rico and Vinya Manianglung, 382-5059, 386-3412 or vinya_d_m@yahoo.com.
