Bishop Ordains First Island-Born Marist
Left, Hawaii’s first native to become a Marist Father will be ordained to the priesthood by Most Reverend John J. Scanlan, D.C., Bishop of Honolulu, at noon on August 15 in Star of the Sea Church.
The new priest. Revered Roland Tam Sing, S.M., was born on September 13, 1943, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Tam Sing (Anita Ahyol).

Resurrection in Waipio: Parish spirit gains new boost with the building of a new leeward Oahu church
Resurrection of the Lord Parish in Waipio-Gentry celebrated its first Mass in its new church, Sunday, Aug. 6, welcoming approximately 900 parishioners and visitors.
The church is the first new parish in the diocese since St. John the Apostle and Evangelist, Mililani, was dedicated 24 years ago.

Bishop wants task force to help schools thrive
This past April, Bishop Larry Silva picked nine people to save Hawaii’s Catholic schools. At least the ones that need saving.
They are called the Schools Planning Task Force. Their bureaucratic-sounding title understated the urgency of their job, which is to create a strategy that, within the next 10 years, will “transform Hawaii Catholic schools from survival mode to one that is thriving.” …
In addition to the closing of two elementary-level schools this past year, the system altogether suffered an unprecedented loss of 500 students. That’s the equivalent of one or two more schools closing.
