Jeffrey Naumann, the new program director of Hale Kau Kau, a program of St. Theresa Church in Kihei that provides meals to the poor and homeless, poses June 19 with the organization’s new van, blessed that day.
The feeding program prepares and serves hot, nutritious meals to all who need them every day of the year.
Begun in 1991, Hale Kau Kau (house of food) now serves 100 meals a day on site and delivers 80 more to the homebound. The program thrives through the dedication of staff and many volunteers. Funding comes from annual fundraising events and grants from Maui County, the Maui United Way, the Hawaii Community Foundation and other groups, and from private donations from kamaaina and visitors.
Hale Kau Kau buys food from the Maui Food Bank at a very nominal price. Grocery stores and hotels donate food as well, keeping the new van busy with pickups. The spacious vehicle is a Ford Transit E250 cargo van donated by Don and Kris Wilson, long time supporters of Hale Kau Kau.
Naumann, joined the program in February. His new administrative assistant, Benjamin Narvaez-Lacen, came on board in June. They were introduced at the blessing and welcomed into the group that continues “Feeding with Compassion and Aloha.”
