50 years ago — July 3, 1970
NO, NOT QUITE CAMELOT! This picturesque, medieval-looking scene represents a most practical operation. Sacred Heart Church on Wilder Avenue, built by Bishop Stephen Alencastre and completed just a year before his episcopal consecration, is tenting for termites for the first time since its construction, begun in 1912. The Gothic design of the edifice makes a graceful outline for the protective covering.

Bishop to ordain 8 permanent deacons
Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo will ordain eight permanent deacons in five separate ceremonies this month. The deacons, three from Oahu, one from Maui, one from Kauai and two from the Big Island, make up the fourth diaconate class for the Diocese of Honolulu.
“Five out of eight deacon candidates have emerged from parishes who previously didn’t have deacons,” said Wallace Mitsui, director of the diaconate formation program for the diocese and a deacon since 1987. “This group has adapted well to many changes.”

Take five
Bishop Larry Silva ponders seminarians and clergy, St. Damien, his episcopal motto, same-sex marriage and other things that have shaped his first five years as head of the Catholic Church in Hawaii.
[Bishop Silva] spent the next 45 minutes talking with the Hawaii Catholic Herald about reaching his first milestone as Bishop of Honolulu.
The job of bishop seems to be a nice fit for this veteran pastor who spent his first 30 years of priesthood working in Oakland, Calif., parishes.
“I just consider the diocese a big parish,” he said.
