50 years ago — May 22, 1970
SECOND MILESTONE — Ground was broken for the new St. John Apostle and Evangelist Church in Mililani Town last Sunday morning. Principals in the simple and impressive ceremony were Mr. Jack Hirakami, president of United Construction Company, who held the contract for construction (left), Father Anthony Pascale, the pastor (center) and Mr. Alan Rowland, architect with Vladimir Ossipoff and Associates (right). The new church is set for completion in the early part of 1971. The parish was started officially on July 15, 1969, by the Most Reverend John J. Scanlan, Bishop of Honolulu.

Bringing Damien home
Pope John Paul II will present the relic, the bones of Blessed Damien’s right hand, to representatives of the Kalaupapa community and the Sacred Hearts Congregation at the end of the June 4 beatification Mass in Brussels, Belgium. …
On July 22, 60 years after the sad scene above took place, Kalaupapa residents will celebrate the “homecoming” of the newly beatified Father Damien with the reinternment of his relic in his original burial place beside St. Philomena Church.

Diocese plans sweeping energy-saving project for parishes and schools
Does your parish have windmills?
It’s a question on an energy “site survey” now going out to Catholic churches and schools across Hawaii from the diocese’s Facilities Management Office. Except the survey calls them “electric wind turbines.”
If the answer is “no,” it may very well be “yes” in the future.
Vertical axis wind turbines could be of the ways some Catholic parishes in Hawaii will become more energy independent.
The site survey is the first step of the Diocesan Energy Conservation Program, a new endeavor that will help Hawaii parishes and schools modify their facilities to save energy and perhaps even produce energy.
