It’s back to classes already for 2 year-round schools
School started early again this year for Star of the Sea Elementary School in Waialae-Kahala and Cathedral School in Honolulu, the two Hawaii Catholic elementary schools currently on a year-round curriculum.
Though the idea of year-round schooling is not new on the mainland, more and more schools in Hawaii, both public and private, are studying the concept with serious interest.

Her father knew Damien
Emma Kamahana Dickerson’s father, David Kamahana, was just 13 years old when he was diagnosed with leprosy and sent to Kalaupapa in 1888. There he came to know Father Damien. Many years later, David Kamahana would testify as a witness for Damien’s cause for sainthood.
“He said Father Damien was very good to him,” said Emma, still slender and active at 85 with a long gray pony tail that bounced from side to side.
