YOUCAT*: Christians bring their life before God through the language of the body: they cast themselves down before God. They fold their hands in prayer or stretch them out. They genuflect or kneel before the all holy God. They listen to the Gospel while standing. They meditate while seated.
A few weeks ago I was at Mass and in the pew next to me was a child about 10 years old with her mother. “Mommy, I don’t want to stand again,” she said.
I couldn’t help but snicker. It made me think about the “Catholic aerobics” that we do at the Good Friday service during the intercessory prayer. What’s all that standing, kneeling, sitting stuff mean when we are in God’s presence?
Standing is a sign of reverence, like when someone important enters the room. It also represents vigilance and readiness.
Sitting is to really listen. What is God saying to me, deep within?
Kneeling is to humble yourself, to recognize your dependence on God.
#YearofFaith Challenge: Be aware of your posture at Mass. What is your body saying in the presence of God?
