It’s official: Vatican announces the date of Father Damien’s beatification
The Vatican has set Father Damien de Veuster’s beatification date: May 15, 1994, Brussels, Belgium.
The superior general of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts in Rome announced the long-awaited date in one sentence faxed March 5 to the congregation’s major superiors around the world. …
Pope John Paul II, who makes the final decision if and when a person is beatified, will preside at the Mass and beatification ceremonies. Beatification is the last major step before sainthood.
Brussels, the capital of Belgium, is about 30 miles from Louvain where Father Damien first entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts and where he is buried.

Big Isle youth to be ‘refugees’ for a day
More than 150 young people on the Big Island will live like refugees in south Kona for one day this weekend. It’s a twist on Big Island Youth Day, a Lenten retreat and Confirmation prep for youth in grades 9-12, hosted annually by a different parish. This year the host parish is St. Benedict in Honaunau. …
The “refugee experience” theme is being planned by Iwie Tamashiro of the Parish Social Ministry Office.
According to Tamashiro, the experience is a 10-stage “game” called “Passage,” developed by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. …
“Supply kits” are distributed and “event cards” deal out imaginary conflicts, injuries, struggles and actions which the “refugees” have to deal with, Tamashiro said.
