Hawaii commission formed for Father Damien beatification
The provincial superior of the Sacred Hearts Fathers and Brothers in Hawaii has called together an 11-member commission to coordinate the local observance of the beatification next year of Father Damien de Veuster.
The 19th century Belgium-born Sacred Hearts missionary who became famous for his work among the victims of Hansen’s disease on Molokai is scheduled to be beatified in October 1993 in Rome by Pope John Paul II. The exact date has not yet been set. …
The commission will form committees to handle the liturgical, artistic, educational, financial, social, spiritual and publicity tasks of the beatification celebration …
The group is also discussing ways to encourage educational, artistic, pastoral and spiritual programs and endeavors related to the Damien beatification.

Heading Down Under
Though World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia, isn’t until next July, Hawaii parishes have been organizing groups, fundraising, and planning their trips to the Land Down Under for many months.
More than 100 from Hawaii are going. Ninety have signed up to travel with the official diocesan group, which will be accompanied by Bishop Larry Silva, the first time a Honolulu bishop will attend World Youth Day. Several other Hawaii church groups are traveling separately.
Patty Kaluau, the diocese’s World Youth Day coordinator, said registration is still open and that the international gathering “is going to be huge.” …
More than 500,000 people are expected to attend World Youth Day from July 15-20.
