The three principals in Sunday’s blessing of Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Ewa Beach were Sister Josanne, S.M.S.M., principal of the school, the Most Reverend John J. Scanlan, Auxiliary Bishop of Honolulu who blessed the school, and Father Bernard J. Eikmeier, pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, who is responsible for the planning and erection of this newest Catholic school on Leeward Oahu.

Bishop to receive most comprehensive master plan ever created for Hawaii’s Catholic schools
When Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario blesses the opening of the school year later this month, he will be handed the most comprehensive, far reaching and costly master plan ever created for Hawaii’s Catholic schools.
At the Aug. 24 Mass of the Holy Spirit at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, which officially begins the school year, the head of the three-person mainland team which directed the 15-month study which produced the master plan, will present it to the bishop.
The plan’s recommendations are designed to guide Catholic education in the islands for the next 10-15 years. …
The plan is a result of a collective effort in research and discussion over the past year and a half by Hawaii’s priests, teachers, school administrators, parents and others.

Church and scouting a rewarding partnership
August 1 marked the 100th anniversary of scouting. The worldwide youth movement began in England in 1907. Three years later it came to America, and soon after to Hawaii.
According to the former co-chairman of Hawaii’s Catholic Committee on Scouting, Francis Mau, the first Catholic sponsored troop in Hawaii was at Sacred Heart Church in Honolulu in 1927, with half the troop members coming from the newly opened Maryknoll School.
The tradition of Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops connected with Catholic parishes and schools and continues in Hawaii today. About 25 parishes, schools and Catholic organizations sponsor Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops and about six sponsor the Girl Scouts.
