A holy hour and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament 7-8 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace will open the universal 100th anniversary celebration of “the miracle of the sun” at Fatima, Portugal.
The miracle of the sun refers to an event which took place on Oct. 13, 1917, and witnessed by a reported 30,000 to 100,000 people during the day of the last apparition of Our Lady of Fatima to three native shepherd children, Lucia dos Santos, Jacinta Marto and Francisco Marto.
The Blessed Mother had promised the visionaries a miracle. What witnesses said happened was that, after some rain, the sun broke through the dark clouds appearing as an opaque, spinning disc which fell toward the earth before swirling back to its regular spot in the sky. It was also reported that people’s clothes, and the muddy ground, wet from the rain, suddenly dried up.
The cathedral observance will include the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, a reading, a homily by Bishop Larry Silva and benediction. All are welcome.
