Kauai’s Holy Cross elementary to close
Faced with the pullout of its entire faculty and a dwindling enrollment, Holy Cross Elementary School in Kalaheo, Kauai, will not open next fall. Holy Cross preschool, however, continues to expand and will remain open.

The kindergarten through sixth grade facility has 45 students, down from 58 last November when Father Carvalho announced his decision to school parents.

Renovation hopes to ease ‘standing room only’ church
Parishioners at St. Joseph Church in Waipahu have a new reason to celebrate these days. After years of hoping and planning for a larger worship space, the renovation of their 65-year-old church is finally being realized.
The shrill sound of hydraulic hammers slamming the pavement and sight of workers laying the roof is actually a welcome change of pace from an otherwise calm Tuesday morning at the Waipahu church. Seemingly unaffected by the noise and activity, the pastor, La Salette Father Joven Junio, sat in the church office on Feb. 7 with a smile of satisfaction on his face.
“This dream has been in the mind of parishioners for a very long time,” said the priest. “And now it’s just amazing to see it all coming together.”
Planning started six years ago. … Back then, the 450 seating capacity was not enough to accommodate the nearly 3,000 people who came to Mass each week.
