The fourth annual Maui March for Life, Jan. 23, a 2,000-step trek from the corner of Kaahumanu Avenue and Kane Street to Christ the King Church in Kahului, is collecting from marchers pledges of a minimum of one penny per step.
The money will go to Malama Pregnancy Center, called Maui’s only alternative to Planned Parenthood.
Marchers will meet at the starting point, across the street from the Maui Beach Hotel, at 9 a.m. for a half hour of sign holding.
The march and related activities are being sponsored by the Maui Councils of the Knights of Columbus and Christ the King Parish Respect Life Ministry.
Organizers are hoping to get young people walking, in particular, St. Anthony High School students, sponsored by their parents and grandparents.
After the march, participants will be given snacks and water before assembling in the church for a conference and a prayer service coordinated by Kuulei Cagasan, chairwoman of the parish Respect for Life ministry.
Oahu Deacon Kin Borja, president of Aloha Life Advocates, will be the keynote speaker. It is hoped that women helped by the Malama Pregnancy Center will give testimonies.
The prayer service will end with a “Rosary for Life” from 11 a.m. to noon.
At 6 p.m. that evening, the five-member NBA Band, will play a fund raising concert at the Maui Coffee Attic with all of the $10-per-person cover charge going to the Malama Pregnancy Center.
