The Micronesian community has long been a vibrant and valued part of the Diocese of Honolulu, and this month it will celebrate its heritage and island fellowship with a special daylong event at Kapiolani Regional Park in Honolulu.
The celebration of faith, culture and community Oct. 17 is part of the diocese’s calendar of events marking the bicentennial of the arrival of Catholicism in Hawaii next year.
Hosted by the Chuukese Catholic Community and other Micronesian island Catholic communities in Hawaii, the event runs from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at the park and concludes the next day, Oct. 18, with Mass at St. Elizabeth Church in Aiea at 2 p.m.
Highlights of the day at the park will include cultural presentations such as dance, songs and attire; sharing of the history of the Catholic Church in Micronesia; and demonstrations of sacred traditions. There will also be local and island food for all to enjoy.
