Family involvement in parish life brings blessings, joy

As St. Therese of Lisieux said, “Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice.” We should always be looking for ways to give to God — even in the small ways like St. Therese.

John and Marichell Castillo, parishioners at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Pearl City, try to give of their time where they can, and they’ve seen how God will pour out his blessings.

John is actively involved with music ministry, sharing his talents on guitar and bass, and he has been asked to play with many of the parish choirs. It all started with him inquiring if the choir would like a guitar player — and he’s been involved ever since.

He loves to use his musical gifts at Mass. Marichell, meanwhile, assists with altar care and the sacristy and environment ministry. And their children — Precious, Alfred and Leizelle — are altar servers.

“I always have the desire to help out in any way I can, especially at our parish when needed — it makes me feel good inside and outside,” Marichell said. “When our three children were baptized and received their sacraments, we got them involved in serving, and they love it.”

The couple had been attending several Catholic churches but fell in love with Our Lady of Good Counsel after being asked to help fix the sound system in 2004.

Anyone with children, especially those involved in sports and other busy activities, can attest that it can often be difficult to attend Mass. But John and Marichell make every effort to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation. They both believe the best way to acclimate to the parish is to get involved.

“Getting involved has been a blessing for our family, especially for our children,” Marichell said. “Being involved in our parish keeps them in line. There’s always God’s way that we all try to follow.”

The Castillos have found that serving is a way to become more confident and comfortable. They have gotten to know people from the parish, and this helps them feel more at home when coming together at Mass.

“To those who are hesitant to get involved in their parish,” Marichell said, “do not hesitate to get involved. Although we all have challenges in our daily lives, you will have a feeling of fulfillment and contentment serving the Lord.”

Mostly, being involved fills the Castillos with joy.

“When you love what you do, especially for the Lord, there is a different joy and happiness that you feel,” Marichell said.

Take the leap — think about your gifts and inquire how you might use them at your parish.

“You will find peace and joy in serving at your parish,” Marichell said. “It’s a completely different feeling when you serve the Lord.”
