Annual priest assignments reflect new ordinations, retirement

06/03/2026 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Hawaii Catholic Herald

Bishop Larry Silva’s annual update of priest assignments takes into account last month’s presbyteral ordination of Deacon John Jacob Akau and Deacon Taylor K. Mitchell, as well as the impending resignation of Msgr. Terry Watanabe on Maui.

Now-Father Mitchell has been assigned as parochial vicar of St. Anthony Church in Wailuku effective July 1. That date also officially marks Msgr. Watanabe’s retirement as well as Father Larry Denis III’s reassignment as pastor of St. Anthony, having served as the parish’s parochial vicar for the past year.

Now-Father Akau has been assigned as parochial vicar of the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu, effective July 1.

Other upcoming priest assignments will take effect June 15:

Father Nicholas Apetorgbor, who has been serving as the parochial vicar of Sacred Heart Church in Honolulu, will become administrator of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Wahiawa.

Father Octavius Moo, Our Lady of Sorrows’ current administrator, will move to the diocesan Hospital Ministry with residence at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in downtown Honolulu.

Father Royd Mweemba, currently with the Hospital Ministry, will become parochial vicar of St. Elizabeth Church in Aiea. That parish’s parochial vicar, Father Renato Maliwat, will then become parochial vicar of Sacred Heart Church in Honolulu.
