Fishermen find support from Philippines, Knights of Peter Claver

01/14/2026 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Special to the Herald

The recently established Unit 419 of the Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary continues to support the foreign longline fishermen working in Hawaii’s longline fishery, working with the Apostleship of the Sea-Hawaii Ministry in its mission to minister to the “people of the sea.”

In collaboration with the Apostleship of the Sea-Hawaii Ministry, the Social Ministry at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu and the Hawaii Longline Association, the Knights of the Council of St. Damien de Veuster and the Ladies of the Court of St. Marianne Cope assisted the Honolulu-based Philippine Consul General Arman R. Talbo and his staff in distributing new clothing to Filipino fishermen on Dec. 23.

The Philippine Consulate in Honolulu is proactive in monitoring the welfare of its citizens working as contract fishermen in Hawaii’s fresh-fish tuna industry. Talbo gave a heartfelt holiday greeting and assurance to the fishermen of the Philippine government’s support.

In addition to the consulate’s support, the Knights and Ladies of Unit 159 in Houston, Texas, sent toiletries for the fishermen, which will be distributed by the Knights and Ladies of Unit 419 during Mass and fellowship Jan. 17.

Knights of Peter Claver is a national organization that ministers to underserved communities and promotes social justice in accordance with the teachings of Christ. Spreading the theological virtues of faith, hope and love through friendship, unity and Christian charity is at the core of what KPC does.

St. Peter Claver ministered to enslaved individuals who arrived by ship in the port city of Cartagena, Colombia. The Christ-like love he expressed to the oppressed and marginalized continues to inspire this same self-giving service in the Unit 419 Knights and Ladies as they dedicate themselves to serving marginalized communities in Hawaii and as the organization grows.

Powered by faith and working with hope, love is shared with all those whom Christ loved. St. Peter Claver, pray for us.
