Bishop Larry Silva was honored as this year’s recipient of the EPIC Award during the annual EPIC Ministry Christmas banquet Dec. 27 at the Hawaii Okinawa Center in Waipio.
The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the local church, particularly in ministries for young people.
Lisa Gomes, director of the diocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis and secretary of the EPIC Ministry board of directors, presented the award — she was also the first recipient of the honor.
In her introduction, Gomes noted, “One thing I’ve learned is this: If (the bishop’s) schedule allows, he will be there to support young adults. Whether it’s celebrating Mass, attending a gathering or simply being present, his support is intentional and consistent.”
The evening also featured the finalists for the Young Adult of the Year award: Alex Cook, coordinator of the EPIC Windward Chapter; Christine Licato, vice director of communications for EPIC Ministry; and Deacon Taylor K. Mitchell, member of the EPIC Ministry board of directors.
Chrislyn Villena, president of the board of directors, shared the accolades of these peer-nominated, outstanding individuals before presenting the award to Deacon Mitchell.
Founded in 2013, EPIC Ministry is a local Catholic nonprofit organization and association of the faithful whose mission is “to empower young adults to follow Christ.” For more information, go to www.epicministry.net.
