Father Mark Gantley greets men who came to his rescue

12/31/2025 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Special to the Herald

On Dec. 11, Father Mark Gantley, judicial vicar of the Diocese of Honolulu, met the two men who saved his life a month earlier.

John M. Pei, left, and Richard Ah Lee Sam came to Father Gantley’s aid Nov. 7 when he collapsed while riding his bicycle on the Windward Community College campus. He had suffered cardiac arrest.

Pei, the security guard on duty, administered CPR; Sam relieved Pei and also administered CPR.

Father Gantley was rushed to Castle Medical Center. On Nov. 12, he underwent triple-bypass open-heart surgery and is recovering well. His mother, Merry Gantley, joined him as he met his rescuers.
