Christ the King Church in Kahului, Maui, hosted a workshop geared toward religious education teachers Sept. 8 called “Proclaiming the Heart of the Gospel: Kerygmatic Catechesis.”
The workshop was presented by Marilyn Santos, associate director of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat on Evangelization and Catechesis, who was visiting Hawaii and who gave presentations at several parishes across the diocese.
Santos’ presentation explored how the essential proclamation of Jesus Christ can shape catechesis, renew parish life and inspire deeper discipleship.
A day earlier, the parish celebrated Deacon Ken Bissen’s 70th birthday with lots of fun, food, music and fellowship with his ohana and with the parish community.
Sept. 19 marked the 179th anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of La Salette. A nine-day novena was held beforehand; each day, an image of Mary was displayed. The images included Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of La Salette, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Penafrancia (venerated in Naga City, Bicol, Philippines), Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Manaoag (venerated in Manaoag, Pangasinan, Philippines).
A potluck dinner and entertainment by the parishioners followed the Mass. The celebration included recognition of the Maui-based La Salette priests who attended the festivities: Father Efren Tomas, Father Anil Varghese, Father Anton Nyo and Father Paul Kannampilly.
Finally, Christ the King’s La Salette choir under the direction of Arsenio Amorio sang at the enshrinement Oct. 5 of a first-class relic of St. Faustina at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Kula. The choir was joined by singers from other parishes throughout Maui.
Msgr. Terry Watanabe, pastor of St. Anthony Church in Wailuku, presided at the enshrinement with Father Nyo, pastor of Our Lady Queen of Angels.
