The Diocese of Honolulu’s next Day of Study will feature a nationally renowned leader in evangelization and catechesis, who also has extensive experience in youth and young adult ministry.

Marilyn Santos, associate director of the Secretariat of Evangelization and Catechesis in the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, is the keynote speaker for the Windward Day of Study, which will take place from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Kailua.

The diocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis is spearheading the event, which will include breakout sessions led by clergy, religious and laypeople from across the diocese.

Santos has also held leadership roles with the Pontifical Mission Societies and the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, and has served in dioceses in Georgia, New Jersey and New York.

According to the diocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis, Santos is a fluent Spanish speaker who was a missionary in Ecuador with VIDES (Volunteers in Development, Education and Solidarity).

She is a past president of La RED — the National Catholic Network de Pastoral Juvenil Hispana — and “is passionate about forming missionary disciples and lifting up the voices of diverse Catholic communities,” according to the OEC.

To register for the Windward Day of Study, go to dayofstudywindward.eventbrite.com.

The diocesan Day of Study initiative, launched during this Jubilee Year, focuses on catechesis, spiritual renewal and fellowship.

Lisa Gomes, director of the OEC, previously told the Hawaii Catholic Herald that there are several reasons that people should consider attending a Day of Study: to gain a deeper understanding of church teachings — such as the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Vatican II — and enrich their faith by doing so, and to share space with other people who are also seeking to grow in their faith.

Upcoming Days of Study after the Sept. 13 Windward event will take place:

  • Oct. 4 at St. Joseph Church and School in Waipahu
  • Oct. 25 at Sacred Heart Church in Lanai City
