Movie reviews: July 18, 2025

A scene from the PG-13 movie “Jurassic World Rebirth,” which is classified by OSV News as A-III — adults. (Universal / OSV News)

“Jurassic World Rebirth” (Universal)

Offered big money by the representative (Rupert Friend) of a pharmaceutical company to help him retrieve dinosaur DNA his corporation can use for advanced research, two special operatives veterans (Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali) and a paleontologist (Jonathan Bailey) join him on a journey to a remote equatorial island, one of the few remaining environments where the predatory creatures, whose ill-advised modern revival constitutes the premise of the franchise to which this sci-fi thriller is an addition, continue to thrive. Their expedition is interrupted by a distress call from a family whose sailboat has been attacked by a marine dino. After the two groups are separated again by a fresh onslaught, and both wash up on the targeted isle, director Gareth Edwards charts their various brushes with death in a sometimes suspenseful, occasionally humorous but ultimately forgettable film. Possibly acceptable for older teens. Much menace and some violence with minimal gore, at least one gruesome image, a scene of urination, mature references, frequent mild swearing, about a half-dozen crude terms, a few crass expressions. The OSV News classification is A-III — adults. The Motion Picture Association rating is PG-13 — parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.

“F1 the Movie” (Warner Bros.)

This slick but shallow sports drama centers on a once-promising Formula One driver (Brad Pitt) who left the Grands Prix circuit behind after a traumatic accident in the 1990s and has led a sketchy existence ever since. Invited back into competition by a former teammate-turned-owner (Javier Bardem), he finds himself in an uneasy partnership with a talented yet callow rookie (Damson Idris), with the outfit’s pioneering female technical designer (Kerry Condon) eventually serving as both peacemaker and love interest. Director Joseph Kosinski brings visual flair to the racing scenes and Ehren Kruger’s script promotes teamwork. But the protagonist’s machismo ultimately veers into recklessness while both the screenplay’s treatment of sexuality and its inclusion of salty dialogue suggest parents should give kids the red light. Offscreen but romanticized premarital sexual activity, a few uses each of profanity and crass language, about a half-dozen milder oaths, at least one rough term, frequent crude talk, an obscene gesture. The OSV News classification is A-III — adults. The Motion Picture Association rating is PG-13 — parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
