Change is on the way for the Herald

07/02/2025 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

To our readers:

The Hawaii Catholic Herald has diligently and joyfully served the islands’ Catholic community for nearly 90 years, providing information, inspiration and connection to readers of all ages. We have seen our share of challenges, but we have been blessed throughout the decades with your support.

The past couple years in particular have been times of trial for the Herald as the newspaper and printing industries face mounting financial and operational hurdles.

The Herald’s longtime printer, Hawaii Hochi, shuttered last year, prompting our transition to The Maui News and its printing operations.

That relationship has now also come to an end with the impending closure of The Maui News’ printing press.

Fortunately, the Herald will continue to be published every two weeks. We will be working with Oahu Publications Inc. — which produces the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Midweek and other publications — to print issues starting July 18.

The change in printers means the Herald itself will also change. The newspaper will now be the same size as Midweek — roughly a square “tabloid” format.

While the Herald’s pages will be physically smaller, our content, by and large, will not change.

We are in fact more determined than ever to continue the Herald’s ministry of informing and uniting Catholics across the state and beyond, offering Catholic news, features, announcements, commentary and more.

I also want to assure you that, through these changes, the Herald has been blessed with the full backing and encouragement of our publisher, Bishop Larry Silva.

The Herald is truly grateful for its readers’ support, and we hope that you will continue to be by our side as we navigate the shifting landscape of the newspaper industry.

Please feel free to reach out to me at cdownes@rcchawaii.org if you have questions or concerns.

Mahalo,

Celia K. Downes
