05/21/2025 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Hawaii Catholic Herald

The local Samoan faith community will welcome a trailblazing leader for several days of events and worship this summer.

Bishop Kolio Etuale Tumanuvao, the first Samoan native to lead the Diocese of Samoa-Pago Pago, will visit Oahu July 8-14.

Planned events include a seminar at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Wahiawa and Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows on July 13.

Bishop Tumanuvao was ordained coadjutor bishop of the Samoa-Pago Pago diocese in 2023, fully assuming the role of bishop last year. Born in the small village of Lotofaga, Samoa, he studied at Mount Angel Seminary in Saint Benedict, Oregon, and was ordained a deacon at Mount Angel Abbey.

He was ordained a priest in 2003 in Holy Family Cathedral in Fatuoaiga, in the Diocese of Samoa-Pago Pago, and has served in American Samoa since then.

For more information about his visit, contact Samoan Catholic Community secretary Elizabeth Emanuele at (808) 372-7729.
