Family, friends and fellow faithful gathered at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu on April 5 to honor 16 clergy and religious men and women celebrating jubilees this year.
The jubilarians — marking 25, 50, 60, 70 and 75 years of priesthood or religious life — included Bishop Larry Silva, who presided at the annual Mass alongside about a dozen other priests (several also jubilarians).
In his homily, Bishop Silva referred to the first reading from Romans, which speaks of boasting. Bishop Silva noted that the diocese could “boast about a sister who has been a nun for 75 years … (and) about the many children and young people who were educated and formed in the faith (because of) the example and the work of these good people,” among other high notes.
Ultimately, Bishop Silva said, “We can boast of many, many things that our jubilarians and many others have accomplished in the service of the Lord but we all know when all is said and done that it is not ourselves about whom we boast … we boast about the Lord working in us and through us.”
Thirteen of the 16 jubilarians were present at Mass and were given plaques during a presentation before dismissal. The family of Congregation of Divine Providence Sister Benedicta Young Hee Ha was on hand to receive her plaque.
Bishop Silva received special recognition from the Leadership Association of Religious Congregations. Sacred Hearts Sister Helene Wood, LARC’s chairperson, and Marianist Brother Brandon Alana, its secretary, thanked him for his ministry and presented him with a commemorative poster
