The Order of Saint Lazarus continued the celebration of its 10th anniversary in Hawaii with a weekend of events, starting with a pilgrimage to Kalaupapa on Jan. 24.
Members of the Hawaii cadre retraced the steps of St. Damien, St. Marianne and Servant of God Joseph Dutton. They were led by Franciscan Sisters Alicia Damien Lau and Barbara Jean Wajda, and Sacred Hearts Father Pat Killilea — all three live and serve in Kalaupapa, continuing the legacy of the saints who also belonged to those religious orders.
On Jan. 25, the Hawaii cadre hosted its “Light of Lazarus Around the World” candle-lighting reception and World Leprosy Day fundraiser at Honolulu Country Club.
The gathering also honored the recent investiture of Grand Commander Rear Adm. Kenneth Moritsugu. A check for $3,850 was presented to the Joseph Dutton Guild and a check for $4,350 was presented to the Damien and Marianne of Molokai Education Center in Waikiki.
Finally, Father William “Pila” Tulua celebrated a thanksgiving Mass Jan. 26 at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. Father Tulua presented the Sword of State of the Order of Saint Lazarus to Moritsugu in a blessing during the Mass.
