Special to the Herald
I invite everyone to recollect memories they have of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace for a book I am compiling celebrating the cathedral.
Were you married there or your children baptized there? Did you spend time in prayer there and found yourself closer to Jesus? Do you serve there as a minister or as a volunteer? Do you have a fond memory with friends or family coming together for Mass, and perhaps meeting other people whom you eventually became close to? What part of the Mass moved you?
It may even be something that made you laugh and brought joy to your life. Whatever that may be, as you recollect those times, pray to God and consider putting it into writing.
My name is Easter Almuena. I am the wife of Deacon Joe Almuena, who has been the deacon at the cathedral for almost 10 years. I am the author and publisher of “Serving God Joyfully Right Here in Hawaii,” a compilation of stories of people who have served in the Diocese of Honolulu. Some of the authors include Franciscan Sister Marie Romano, Father EJ Resinto in his seminary days, friends, family and others who submitted their own stories.
I encourage you to write a submission for “Memories of the Cathedral Downtown Honolulu” which I envision to be published by early next year. The maximum number of words is 500. Do not worry about grammar; what I am looking for is your own unique experience of being in the cathedral or how the cathedral has helped you in your faith journey. The deadline is Dec. 31. Send your story to Easter.Almuena@gmail.com.
The book will be dedicated to Bishop Larry Silva. All proceeds will go to the completion of the renovation of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace.
