Celebrating the 140th anniversary of St. Marianne Cope’s arrival to Hawaii

11/22/2023 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Entering from the main door of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu Nov. 8, seven women replicate the arrival to Hawaii on that date in 1883 of Mother Marianne Cope and her six companion Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse. The 140th anniversary reenactment included a dialogue between the nun and the bishop, a Hawaiian chant and a lamentation. In the century and twoscore years that followed the arrival, nearly 300 Sisters of St. Francis would be assigned to Hawaii. (Photo courtesy of Dann Ebina)

She was beatified on May 14, 2005, in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. Pope Benedict XVI canonized her in St. Peter’s Square on Oct. 21, 2012. (Photo courtesy of Dann Ebina)
